Working 5 to 9

“Tumble out of bed, and stumble to the… platform!”

The last couple of days we have been in a working haze. Last week, the new barrel and ground plate finally arrived in Anchorage, so we drove immediately to Anchorage and picked it up. Since we had to leave Cooper landing after the weekend, we basically had a long weekend to finish the second coring location. Sadly the weather predictions were not looking too good. However, nothing could stop us, we woke up at 5 am and went to check the weather conditions at the lake every morning. If it was reasonably wavy, we headed out and cored as much as possible, otherwise we went back to the cabins and checked the hourly weather station data. Eventually we were able to recover 13 meter of sediment cores in the second location, which is amazing regarding the circumstances!

On Wednesday we broke down the platform and headed back to Anchorage. We finished the job, and we are leaving with more than 50 cores and tons of stories. I sincerely want to thank my incredible coring team (Koen, Thomas, Maarten, Adrian) for making this survey possible, in good times and in bad. Also many thanks to Peter and Katie, the Lessard’s, George, Dan, Alan, Julie, Melissa from Sackett’s and the guy from the fish report!
